Duties and
Responsibilities: The Georgia Department of Driver Services is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Support Service Worker. Under immediate supervision, the Support Service Worker receives applications for and issues Georgia driver's licenses. This position verifies applicants' eligibility for driver's licenses; administers and grades written examinations on traffic laws; and, administers road tests to rate applicants' driving ability. Support Service Worker processes reinstatement transactions according to prescribed guidelines and prepares reports to document workload activities and account for licenses issued and fees collected.

Responsibilities:

Provides clear and accurate information to customers and the general public concerning agency services, laws, rules, and regulations. Follows guidelines to verify identity and document validity of information received. Reviews applications to determine eligibility and issues or reinstates driver's license and identification cards in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and laws. Conducts vision screening. Administers and evaluates written and road tests to eligible applicants. Enters data from forms, records and/or other sources into the computer. Processes documents and/or collects prescribed fees and completes transactions. Set up and operates office and licensing equipment.
Condition of Employment: A valid Georgia driver's license is required and must be maintained while employed in this position. Non-Georgia residents must have a recognized equivalent license.

As a condition of employment, employees who are employed at a Customer Service Center which conducts CDL (Commercial Driver's License) road tests must successfully complete the CDL Examiner Certification. This certification consists of a knowledge (written) test and a classroom test portion. Employees will be given three (3) attempts to successfully complete the knowledge portion of the testing and two attempts to successfully complete the classroom portion of the certification. Employees must meet this requirement to continue employment with DDS. Upon successful completion of the CDL Examiner Certification, employees who are employed at a Customer Service Center (CSC) which conducts CDL road tests must maintain certification to remain at the CSC.


TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES REQUIRED TO BE SUCCESSFUL:
-Knowledge of agency laws, rules, regulations

-Ability to operate all licensing equipment

-Ability to use related equipment in the licensing procedures.

DDS employees, in the event of an identified emergency, may be required, as a term and condition of employment, to assist in meeting the emergency responsibilities of the Department. In addition, in an emergency situation, they may be required to perform responsibilities that are not regularly assigned to them in order to continue the operations of the agency.


Road Testing: As part of the driver examiners responsibilities they will conduct passenger road test and motorcycle skill test. Additionally, if you accept a position at a Commercial Driving Test facility you will be required to conduct CDL Skills test. A description of each test is listed below:

Passenger Vehicle Skills Test - These tests are initiated in a DDS testing area that is adjacent to the facility parking area. The test is composed of three parts:
Vehicle inspection - examiner will walk around the vehicle to check turn signals and other factors to insure the vehicle is safe to conduct the road test.
Basic Skills - This is composed of three exercises including parallel parking, 3 point backing and a quick stop maneuver.
Road Skills - This is composed of actual evaluation of the customer's ability to safely operate the vehicle on public streets or highways.
The passenger vehicle skills test is conducted throughout the year in a variety of weather conditions including rain, wind, summer heat and cold winter days. Testing begins in the early morning hours and continues through the early evening hours. The tests run approximately 30 minutes.

Motorcycle Skills Test - These tests are initiated in a DDS testing area that is adjacent to the facility parking area. The test is composed of two parts:
Vehicle inspection - examiner will walk around the vehicle to check turn signals and other factors to insure the vehicle is safe to conduct the test.
Skills test - This is composed of multiple maneuvers on the skill test course. This test is not conducted on public streets or highways.
The motorcycle skill test is conducted throughout the year in a variety of weather conditions including wind, summer heat and cold winter days. The tests run approximately 15 minutes.

Commercial Vehicle Skills Test - These tests are initiated in a DDS testing area. All employees that work in the following DDS locations are required to conduct Commercial Vehicle Skills Tests: Dalton, Gainesville, Cumming, Between, Jackson, Milledgeville, Thomson, Albany and Brunswick. Other sites may begin Commercial Skills in the future. The test is composed of three parts and takes approximately 2 hours.
Vehicle inspection - examiner will walk around the vehicle and tests the customers understanding of the different parts of the commercial vehicle. This takes approximately 45 minutes and the employee is outside of the vehicle the entire time.
Basic Skills - This is composed of various maneuvering exercises conducted in the DDS testing area. This takes approximately 30 minutes and the employee is outside the vehicle the entire time.
Road Skills - This is composed of actual evaluation of the customer's ability to safely operate the vehicle on public streets or highways. This takes approximately 45 minutes and the employee is riding in the commercial vehicle.
The commercial vehicle skills test is conducted throughout the year in a variety of weather conditions including rain, wind, summer heat and cold winter days. Testing begins in the early morning hours and continues through the early evening hours.
Commercial Driver License Certification:
Employees who are employed at a Customer Service Center which conducts CDL (Commercial Driver's License) road tests must successfully complete the CDL Examiner Certification. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
